The Pompton Falls Volunteer Fire Department
(P.F.V.F.D.) was founded in 1923, in Wayne, New Jersey.
PFVFD began with a meeting by Moritz Klein, Mitchel
Dawes Sr. and Harry Rhinesmith, in Rhinesmith's store
on Hamburg Turnpike. On November 15th, 1923 our Fire
Department was formed with 25 charter members.
The fire department was originally located on Pompton
Crossroads, at the corners of Jackson Avenue and Black
Oak Ridge road in a building made available to Company
#3 by the old Sheffield Farms company. The present
building on Jackson Avenue was built by the members
themselves, who gave up weekends for a year until
the building was completed in 1945.
Although we originally served nearly one third of
the township's land area, Pompton Falls Volunteer
Fire Department is now one of five fire companies
that provide fire protection to the citizens of Wayne.
Being the third Fire department created in Wayne,
we became Company #3.
The original fire truck used by the company was a
1924 Mack pumper which was subsequently retired in
1951. This vehicle is now part of a permanent exhibit
in the Village Museum in Monroe, New York. No longer
do our volunteer firemen have to hope that they will
be one of the six lucky ones who will get firefighting
boots and jackets for a particular call. Instead of
six sets of gear for the whole company to share, each
volunteer now is equipped with their own individual
set personal protective equipment.
